High Definition 3D Laser Scanning

3D Laser Scanning Produces Perfect As-Build Replicas

3D Laser Scanning can produce near perfect as-built replicas of any environment. This includes large structures with complicated layouts as well as small spaces like cramped mechanical rooms. Though Spaeder uses 3D scanning on its construction projects, we work with customers in a wide range of fields who need precise measurements. 3D Scanning applications are truly endless.

      • Construction (precise measurements & point-cloud models)
      • Historical Preservation Projects
      • Forensic Investigation
      • 3D Design

What are the benefits of 3D Scanning?

3D Scanning is fast. Imagine this scenario. A company is asked to retrofit a building for air-conditioning, but the original building plans no longer exist. One way to solve this problem is to draw new building plans. For larger buildings or buildings that have changed significantly over the years, the time and labor of measuring, generating drawings and then checking these drawings could add up fast. Conversely, a technician could scan the job site and compile a perfect as-built 3D point cloud model over the course of a few days (depending on the scope), greatly assisting in the retrofit’s BIM design.

No more guesswork. Professional building models change during production and can be subject to inaccuracies. A 3D scan will tell you the exact dimensions of a room down to 1/16th of an inch as well as everything in that room, including nuts and bolts and random ceiling struts. Real-world circumstances are never as pretty as the model and being aware of those circumstances helps to prevent mistakes or miscalculations during a project.

Can be used with modeling software. The 3D point cloud can be imported into modeling programs such as Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD as well as used with coordination software like Revizto and Navisworks, serving the same purpose as an architectural drawing or building model.

It’s not just about construction. As mentioned above, 3D laser scanning has almost endless applications. One of these is forensic investigation. Having all the details from a crime scene available to be viewed and reviewed is an invaluable addition to any investigation. Another popular usage of 3D scanning includes historic preservation / heritage projects. The 3D scan can freeze a space in time just as it is. The scan could be used as an historical record, to aid in restoration, or even document changes throughout the restoration process.

How do 3D Laser Scanners Work?

Scanners such as the FARO Focus 3D use a rotating laser projected onto the surrounding environment. The laser collects precisely measured points of data. The data points are compiled into a three-dimensional image called a “point cloud.” This point cloud is an exact real-world replica of the surrounding environment. Spaeder’s 3D scanning services are able to produce both full color as well as black and white references. Our 3D laser scanners can pinpoint important areas that require more detail and save time on the less vital portion of the scan.
