Examples of Spaeder’s Process Piping Work Throughout Industrial, Power/Energy, Refining, Food and Beverage Sectors
Spaeder works in a variety of industries accumulating a great deal of experience and knowledge. One of the best examples of process piping is a refining process platform in northern Pennsylvania. This project began as a reality capture and modeling contract but grew into a complete design assist that included a new layout of all lines connecting to the platform, along with re-piping all of those lines as well. This client is an excellent example of how engineers at Spaeder can add value by not only conducting the design review but also implementing those designs in the most cost-effective manner possible. Through our state-of-the-art design and coordination services, we were able to pre-fabricate most of the piping to be installed in the field, conduct testing of those pipes and then X-ray all the welds for quality control.
Another example of process piping was for a company located on one of the Great Lakes that performed rail transfers. Spaeder designed and implemented the process piping for the facility including unload piping, piping to the tanks and boilers and associated tubing for this large process piping project. We used a variety of materials for this project including carbon steel, stainless and Resistoflex Teflon-lined piping to achieve the highest quality standard for this very intricate and complete job.
What is Process Piping?
Process piping is different than the pipes used to deliver liquids and gases for heating and cooling processes, or pipework which leads to plumbing fixtures or waste-water drains. Process pipes are pipes and components that are not part of a building’s mechanical systems and used to move, mix, separate, stop, distribute or stop the flow of a fluid. Because of this, fabrication is at the heart of our process piping work at Spaeder.

Process Piping Compliance vs. Plumbing Compliance
Process piping and plumbing do have different codes and regulations. In plumbing operations, copper piping is necessary to transport water safely to the plumbing fixtures. Process piping requires the use of a multitude of materials to complete the system without negatively impacting the end product of the manufacturing process. Permits are required for plumbing or process piping systems as well as the backflow preventer.
